We look at this like a great compliment to our spirit of innovation, risk-taking, and entrepreneurship.

Mechanical watches are little machines with moving parts made traditionally of mostly metal. While electronic watches are cheaper, mechanical watches are typically of a much higher-quality, and preferred by collectors and aficionados. While more interesting than most electronic watches, mechanical watches do not perform as well as electronic watches in many situations. Over a decade ago some high-end watch makers began to experiment with alternative materials in an effort to increase the performance of traditional mechanical watches.

Silicium has not changed the manufacture of traditional watch making but opened up certain new possibilities, which I believe are a benefit to the end consumers. The knowledge, training, and craftsmanship of the individual watchmaker has not changed at all but the accuracy and durability, particularly of the escapement has improved. So in many ways silicium parts merely replace metal ones.

Silicium will stay and have its place in watch history just like the first Freak which was introduced in 2000 will always be mentioned when it comes to watch history. Innovation and evolution will not stand still and we at Ulysse Nardin have developed silicium to a higher level by “coating” it was a diamond layer.
