Recon Instruments has revealed the Recon Jet, which combines buy glasses
online with a heads-up display designed specifically for sports.
The new glasses are due to be unveiled at Google I/O, starting on Wednesday in
San Francisco.Recon Instruments has previously integrated a HUD into skiing
goggles and is now making the hop to glasses.
"We are excited to be
showing Recon Jet at Google I/O. Since we started the company in 2008 we have
developed HUDs with a purpose; to relay instant, activity specific, user defined
information effortlessly to the user's eye," said Hamid Abdollahi, chief
technical officer of Recon Instruments. Thanks to miniturisation of the
components involved, you get a dual-core CPU, a dedicated GPU, GPS, Wi-Fi,
Bluetooth 4.0 and ANT+ for connection to other sports sensors. There's also an
HD display and camera, the display offering "gaze detection" so it switches off
when you're not actually looking at it.
There's also a mic and speakers
and, of course, polarised lenses on the fashion glasses
themselves. The glasses weigh 60g.The Recon Jet reveal at Google I/O will give
developers the chance to see what the new glasses can do, with Recon looking for
third-party app integration with an SDK and API available. That should mean
sports apps and services like Runkeeper or Nike+ could easily be incorporated.
Recon says it is already working with some of the top sports companies to make
that happen. There's no word on pricing or availability, but it looks like Google
Glass has a sporty cousin.xcTFR5DS
While picking him up from school in
Los Angeles, the Oscar winner's 3-year-old grabbed hold of the fashion eyeglasses in
an apparent effort to remove them. But who can blame him? After all, it has been
extremely bright in SoCal lately.Sunglasses are something I almost never spend
money on. With good reason—I tend to lose them very, very quickly. But a new
pair from Arnette caught my attention because of the ability to customize them.
The Squaresville line from Arnette is the latest addition to the Arnette
Creative Exchange System (ACES). Each pair of glasses comes with an extra set of
interchangeable arms that are compatible with other A.C.E.S frames. An included
tool allows you to press into a hole on the side of each arm and then slowly
slide the arms off so you can insert a different set.
The arms felt
secure in place when changed out and the hinges didn’t seem to take any
noticeable wear and tear after I switched them a few times. I found I quite
liked wearing, let’s say a black model with brown arms, as opposed to black
ones.
The fashion
sunglasses appear to be a hit with a number of celebrities already
including Robbie Maddison who is known for successfully jumping 96 feet up onto
the Arc de Triomphe in front of Paris Las Vegas and then descending an 80-foot
drop off the monument on New Years Eve 2008.
