15 of the Best Travel Photos Taken With an iPhone-PriceAngels

Monica Stott, a travel blogger and multimedia journalism graduate, has used an cheap iphone 4 cases for several years to take the photographs for her blog, The Travel Hack. "I recently invested in a fabulous new digital SLR camera. However, I've realized that I actually prefer using my iPhone," she says. "I'm heading to South America next year and I'm even considering selling my camera and just taking my iPhone. The quality isn't brilliant when they're blown up large but they look great online."
It is not just the convenience and compact size of the iPhone that appeals. The sharpness of the images, the brilliance of the colors and the ability of the lens to work in low light are also key factors. Sophisticated photo editing apps such as Camera+ and Kitcam allow users to enhance their images without them looking overly manipulated.

There are many ways that Apple's iPhone has transformed our lives. It has put a previously unimaginable array of technology in our pockets - everything from a global positioning system to a video editor. One of the many industries it has changed in the process is travel photography. As the quality of pictures taken on the iPhone improves, some travel professionals are ditching their expensive and bulky camera equipment and carrying only a smartphone. There is even a word for it: iPhoneography.

Kirsten Alana, a New York-based photographer and travel blogger, who writes Aviators and a Camera, says: "I discovered a love for iPhone photography a few years ago - it was such a switch from my decade of earning a living shooting with SLR and dSLR cameras. Now that I use the apple accessories as my primary camera for travel, I'm longing again to experiment with other technology. For me, the joy exists in continuing to always try new things."fd3ADSAa23

Another reason for the rise of the iPhone has been declining budgets amongst travel companies and destination marketers. When my partners and I set up our website, 101 Holidays, we assumed we would find great free-to-use photography from tourist boards and tour operators, but much of the stock was poor or out of date and there was no money to commission professionals. I quickly found that in some cases my own iPhone images were better.

On a recent trip to Egypt I experimented by taking photos with both my best iphone 4s accessories and with a Canon digital SLR. Although the SLR images were sharper and more detailed, I preferred the colors and the impact of the iPhone images. So I asked some of the world's leading travel bloggers each to select one of their favorite iPhone images, and explain how they took it. Check out the slideshow to see what they chose and why.

Fad-Loving Japan May Derail a Sony Smartphone-PriceAngels

Sony’s Xperia Z of the top 10 cell phones, which went on sale in February, has already sold almost a million units by some estimates. But NTT DoCoMo, Japan’s largest mobile carrier, will soon stop selling it.As Sony banks on smartphones to turn around its struggling electronics business, it faces an increasingly bothersome obstacle at home: the demands of Japan’s powerful cellphone carriers, which remain obsessed with constant model updates.

For years, Japan’s three largest mobile network companies have pressed phone makers here to update their handsets every three or four months, providing Japanese consumers a dazzling array of newfangled phones and features each season. Phones with digital TV broadcast receivers were once all the rage; a phone without it was never going to sell. Then it was thumbprint scans; you’d be hard pressed to find those on many phones today. The same is true of swiveling screens, and to a lesser extent, electronic wallets.

“This is the worst of Japanese companies’ excessive obsession with the new,” said Yuichi Kogure, an associate professor in information technology policy at Aomori Public University and the author of several books on Japan’s cellphone industry. “But now the mobile phone makers are exhausted.”

Sony’s Xperia Z got caught in this marketing buzz saw. DoCoMo started selling the Xperia Z in Japan on Feb. 9 as part of the carrier’s spring 2013 collection, replacing the Xperia AX of the winter 2012 collection. A month later, on March 15, DoCoMo announced its summer collection of 11 Latest Smartphones, with the Xperia Z replaced by the Xperia A, which went on sale last month.fd3ADSAa23

Phone manufacturers here have found it impossible to achieve the economies of scale that would justify the high development costs and the slim profit margins. Because separate teams of designers at each handset maker race to build handsets from the ground up for each separate carrier, few phone makers have been able to develop a coherent global product strategy, analysts say.

The unique pace of the Japanese cellphone market largely cuts it off from the rest of the world, making it difficult for one manufacturer to make and market phones for both the Japanese and global markets, said Kenji E. Kushida, an expert on Japan’s information and communications technologies at Stanford.

Not every maker succumbs to this whirligig and, not surprisingly, those that don’t aren’t Japanese. Apple has announced a new iPhone model roughly once a year. Its iPhone 5 came out in September, and the company is not expected to introduce a new model until the fall. Samsung Electronics is focusing its resources on its sleek Galaxy S4 smartphone, which went on sale in April, a full year after its predecessor the Galaxy S3. The scattershot efforts by Japanese handset designers could not compete with a single blockbuster product like Apple’s iPhone, Mr. Kushida said. It turned out that Japanese consumers didn’t want to Buy Cell Phones for each season after all, he said, but a well-designed one.

Since its release in 2008, the iPhone has been a best seller in Japan, becoming the most popular handset here. In 2012, the iPhone led all handsets with an overall 15 percent market share, ahead of former market leaders Sharp and Fujitsu, according to data provider IDC Japan.

Fad-Loving Japan May Derail a Sony Smartphone-PriceAngels

Sony’s i9500 S4 smartphone, which went on sale in February, has already sold almost a million units by some estimates. But NTT DoCoMo, Japan’s largest mobile carrier, will soon stop selling it.But it is already a has-been in Japan. DoCoMo has turned its attention to a new phone, the Sony Xperia A — a model with fewer features that has not won the stellar praise showered on the Z.

“It’s time for a new model,” said Mai Kariya, a DoCoMo representative in Tokyo. “We’re finished with the Xperia Z, and now focusing on the Xperia A.”As Sony banks on smartphones to turn around its struggling electronics business, it faces an increasingly bothersome obstacle at home: the demands of Japan’s powerful cellphone carriers, which remain obsessed with constant model updates.

The constant feature roulette has helped carriers lure customers away from rival networks. But it taxes the research and development resources of Japan’s i9500 S4 1:1 makers, who must meet the constant demands from carriers for new high-end features and frequent handset renewals.

Sony Xperia Tablet Z Review-PriceAngels

If you haven’t been paying attention to Sony lately, then you’ve been missing out on some of the company’s best mobile products it has ever released. The Sony Xperia Z and ZL are powerful and sleek devices that can take on just about any other smartphone available today head on, and the same goes for its latest tablet offering, the Xperia newest tablets.

In an iPad-dominated market, Android tablet manufacturers have made a habit of chasing the 7-inch tablet market by offering serviceable tablets at an affordable price point. Not Sony, though. The company is still laser-focused on the high-end 10 inch tablet market, and it shows with the Tablet Z. It looks as though Sony has left no stone unturned with it’s latest tablet, but is it enough for the consumer to make the jump? In this review, we’ll find out just that. Read on!

The Sony Xperia Tablet Z is packed with just about any feature one could imagine on a tablet, and then it goes a little further.Rocking a 10.1 inch 1920 x 1200 Reality HD Display (about 225 ppi), the screen on the Tablet Z is quite beautiful. Images are crisp and color reproduction is stellar. This much we expected of Sony, but as we know, it's not just about the display. The Tablet Z also rocks a 1.5 GHz quad-core Snapdragon S4 Pro CPU, 2GB RAM, 16/32GB storage options, micro SD card slot, Wi-Fi a/b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.0, NFC, IR Blaster, and more.

Possibly the Sony Xperia Tablet Z's best trick is that its water and dust resistant, which can allow the device to be submerged into 3 feet of water for up to 30 minutes. Because of its water and dust resistance powers, you'll find all ports for the tablet under small covers to keep them water tight.sd3SD2d43

The front of the tablet is about as clean as any 10 inch tablet, where you'll find only the 2 megapixel front-facing camera and Sony's logo on the top left disrupting the otherwise solid black face. The left side of the Tablet Z gives home to the 3.5mm headphone jack (under a cover), the familiar silver power/lock button we've seen on devices like the Xperia Z, volume rocker, notification LED, two small connections for the optional docking accessory, and a small speaker grill at the bottom. The right side is clean, leaving only a speaker grill, with the bottom sporting two more speaker grills, the micro USB charging port, and micro SD card slot.

About those speakers. There are only two of them, but Sony cleverly placed two grills to each speaker on the corners of the tablet. This can help greatly depending on how the user holds the tablet, as sound will won't be muffled due to the other grills at the bottom to show the user where the chip is located.

The back of the latest android tablet is done up in a nice soft touch finish, and is as elegantly bare as the front. Here you'll find the 8 megapixel camera, Xperia branding smack dab in the middle, and a NFC logo at the bottom.Looking at the Xperia Tablet Z and picking it up are two very different experiences. A simple glance at the device doesn't really do it justice. The Xperia Tablet Z is both incredibly thin and light. The Tablet Z is thinner than a pencil, coming in at a mere 6.8mm and ultra light weight at only 495 grams. Compare this to the 9.4mm/652 gram iPad and the 8.89mm/594 gram Galaxy Note 10.1.

Kingwood-area retailers host cell-phone drop-off -PriceAngels

Three Humble-area retailers are collecting used i9500 S4 cell phones and cell-phone accessories to be recycled to provide calling cards for military service members stationed overseas.Cell Phones for Soldiers, is a 501(3) organization that was launched in 2004 by Massachusetts teenagers Robbie and Brittany Bergquist. It started as a way to show the Bergquist family's appreciation for service personnel.

The program collects cell phones that are sent to a recycling center in Ohio. The recycling center will, depending on the condition of the phone, strip the phone of the small metal components to be reused in other phones, or the phones will be refurbished to be resold in other markets.Brittany Bergquist said the type of cell phones they collect are typically the older flip phones that are quickly disappearing from the market, but they will take all kinds.

"Any type of phone is acceptable," she said. "Even bag phones, car phones and those old brick phones from when cell phones first came out."Bergquist said the phones don't have to be in working condition to be accepted. They have accepted phones that are water-logged, have been run over or smashed beyond repair.

"We accept all of them," she said. The money derived from the Ohio recycling center for those old cell phones is used to purchase calling cards that are sent to the troops overseas. The inspiration for Cell Phones for Soldiers came as a result of a news story that Brittany and Robbie Bergquist had seen in their hometown about a soldier who'd amassed an $8,000 cell-phone bill to speak with loved ones from his overseas location.

"It was the first time we'd ever heard that the troops had to pay for their own phone calls home," she said."We knew we wanted to do something to make a difference."Their first hope was to pay off the soldier's i9500 S4 1:1 cell phone bill, but when they realized they could do more to help, they became inspired.DSsSed2ed

"We knew this was our calling," she said.Calling cards can be requested by the military service member's family or through the service members command by contacting Cell Phones for Soldiers through their website.Bergquist said Cell phones for Soldiers has sent out requests for as many as 5,000 calling cards at one time, which were distributed by unit chaplains or commanders who often work tirelessly to maintain good morale among the troops.

"It makes us feel good that we can support our troops and really help our heroes," she said.Since the launch of the nonprofit, it has provided 2.5 million phone cards, which equates to 181 million minutes of talk time. The program has also recycled more about 10.8 million cell phones, reducing their impact on landfills throughout the United States.

"This is what Cell Phones for Soldiers has become, and it's incredible to have touched so many lives," Bergquist said.Through July 31, the PostNet locations will be collecting used cell phones during regular business hours.

Unique System Needed to Regulate Electronic Cigarettes-PriceAngels

No system imposed by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) or Health Canada -- a similar government agency in our neighbor to the North -- can adequately address electronic cigarettes, Sara Sborovski, partner at law firm Gilbert's LLP, said during today's first webinar in the Smoke Free Alternatives Trade Association (SFATA) Summer Webinar Series."We need a unique system regarding whether e-cigarettes should be regulated as drugs or natural products," she stated. "EGO CE4 are one of the most innovating new industries right now and placing them under one large umbrella is not enough."

The difference between being classified a natural health product vs. a drug is huge, the attorney added. Being considered a natural health product is clearly the simplest way to FDA and Health Canada approval. In fact, if the product doesn't contain nicotine and makes no health claims, the path to approval can be simple, said Sborovski.

Natural health products can offer a recommended use, though. A statement such as "Eases the transition into a smoke-free environment" can be easily proven, the Toronto-based lawyer explained.Conversely, if an e-cigarette contains more than 4 milligrams of nicotine per unit, it is automatically classified as a drug in Canada. Once considered a drug, an e-cigarette must be backed up by supporting clinical trials.

Even if this difficult litmus test is passed, a product classified as a drug only receives clearance for sale in one country. Hence, Sborovski advised manufacturers listening to the webinar to attempt to conduct clinical trials that multiple countries' health departments can approve.DSsSed2ed

Hallandale, Fla.-based SFATA was founded in 2011 and describes itself as "the voice of the electronic cigarette industry." The association will conduct two more webinars this summer, one regarding e-cigarette insurance essentials on July 23 and another on e-cigarette imports on Aug. 20. Click here to register.

E Cigarette Industry Under Fire Discusses ECigarette-PriceAngels

CE4-For a decade, small purveyors of electronic cigarettes have largely had the US market to themselves. Now, with sales projected to double to US$1 billion this year, brands with such names as Logic, Njoy and Vapor are waiting to exhale as giant tobacco companies begin to invade their turf.

In August, Altria Group, the largest cigarette maker in the US, will start selling its MarkTen electronic cigarettes in the state of Indiana. No2 maker Reynolds American plans a national roll-out of its Vuse electronic cigarette, beginning in the state of Colorado next month. Lorillard has boosted distribution of its Blu eCigs to more than 80,000 stores.sfko32ds2f

The tobacco companies' moves come as officials seek to determine if the devices are safer than traditional cigarettes. Users inhale vapour created when a battery-powered tube heats a liquid nicotine solution, giving them a hit without burning or smoke. On June 12, the British government said ego e cig should be regulated as medicines to ensure quality and safety. France plans to ban them from public venues; several US cities have already.

The US Food and Drug Administration, which regulates tobacco products, has yet to impose rules for the devices. Most electronic cigarettes are made in China, where they were invented by pharmacist Hon Lik. ProSmoke Electronic Cigarettes, the company frequently rated as the best e-cigarette on the market, have successfully tested their new e-cigarette products in retail for six months with amazing results. In the six-month market study, 98% of customers indicated they preferred ProSmoke e-cigarettes to the competition. Additionally, 81% of customers would return to the same store to buy ProSmoke electronic cigarette products again.

The electronic cigarette market is projected to double in growth this year alone. Electronic cigarettes are being covered more and more in the news with stories about Big Tobacco taking a serious look at entering the market soon. ProSmoke is one of the oldest companies in the industry and has used their market experience to design a product that not only benefits the customer, but also the retailer selling their disposable e-cigarettes. ProSmoke's retail packaging has been market tested and ranked the best in the industry for design and retail visibility.

ProSmoke's new disposable e-cigarettes are designed specifically for the retail environment, with vegetable based ingredients, PET1 recycled materials, and attractive/informative packaging."ProSmoke is well positioned as the best in the market, offering the most comprehensive e-cigarette solutions for retail success," said a ProSmoke representative.

ProSmoke's product is reliable, typically last longer than similar product, use vegetable based ingredients and recycled products, and have a lower cost of ownership; this allows customers to save up to 80% when compared to regular cigarettes and ensures repeat business. ProSmoke is the first and only company certified by the Green Business Bureau – giving retailers and customers the peace of mind that that are buying a product from an environmentally responsible company.

The one-piece construction of ProSmoke electronic cigarette battery eliminates breakable parts, and its Green Certification gives customers higher confidence in the product. ProSmoke can offer a dependable wholesale cigarette solution to retailers that will increase margins and keep their retail customers returning to purchase it again.

Minnesota’s new $1.60-per-pack sales tax increase on cigarettes begins next week. Meanwhile, retailers are betting smokers will try to switch to a tobacco product not subject to the state’s tobacco taxes: electronic cigarettes.Electronic cigarette, also known as e-cigarettes or e-cigs, have been around for 10 years. Some manufacturers of e-cigarettes are pushing them as a safe alternative or even a way to quit.

The problem is there have been no comprehensive studies on e-cigarettes, which do contain nicotine. While health officials are urging caution, e-cigarette makers claim the battery-powered devices that use liquid nicotine are a healthier choice.Whether or not it is, the e-cigarette is gaining in popularity.Smokedale, a tobacco shop in Oakdale, needs to expand their e-cigarette space due to increased demand.

Pick Up the Phone!-PriceAngels

This summer, I am taking it upon myself to assist people in exploring ways to communicate. This is going to be much easier than you might imagine. I have something to tell each and every one of you: That invention that you use to type text messages can also be used to make i9500 S4 phone calls!

I cannot tell you how many conversations I have had in the last few weeks with people who are sick and tired of people sending them nothing but text messages. For people under 30, I am going to sound like an old man, but here it goes: If you want to tell someone something important, you can actually pick up the phone and call them to speak to them and make sure that they understand you correctly. I know that this may sound crazy, but some people out there do not even have text messaging on their phones, so when you think you are communicating with them, you are not.

Last week I was at a party where a friend was telling me that during a recent family emergency, her family members sent her urgent text messages telling her to rush to the hospital. But guess what? She has never had text messaging on her phone. Her family had no response when she later asked, "Why didn't you simply call me to tell me about the emergency?" They were embarrassed to admit that none of them had even thought of actually dialing her number and speaking with her.sfko32ds2f

The second statement he made was even sweeter. He told me, "When I pick up the phone to chat with someone, I feel like I am visiting with them." What a novel idea to make someone feel special and actually hear their voice.

To this I say, "Amen!" You would not believe how well you can communicate when you actually pick up the phone to speak with someone. How many times have you read an email and asked yourself, "What the hell is this person saying?" Forget about all the text lingo and shortened words that people use. How many times have you meant something one way and it has been interpreted differently by the person receiving the text? And for those of you who have no clue what some of the text lingo being used is, check this out.

What I am getting at is this: If you want to make sure that what you are saying is communicated correctly, pick up the i9500 S4 1:1 phone. And in today's dating world, if you want to make someone feel special, try speaking to them instead of sending them a text. You will be surprised by how many people will say, "Thanks for the call. It was great hearing from you."

For all of you out there who think I am crazy for telling you to pick up the phone and actually speak to someone, I have this to say: HAND, ATB, KC, T+, TTFN. For those of you who are wondering what the hell that means, have a nice day, all the best, keep cool, think positive, and ta-ta for now.

Dozens of drivers stopped for seatbelt, cell phone violations-PriceAngels

Extra law enforcement patrols were added between May 20 and June 2 to search for drivers who were texting or talking on their GT-I9300 cell phones, and for people on the road who were not using seatbelts.A total of 59 tickets were issued for seatbelt infractions, and 16 tickets were handed out for cell phone/texting or usage of other electronic device tickets.

Last year, similar patrols in Kitsap County resulted in 96 seatbelt infractions and 10 cell phone violations.Authorities said the extra patrols also netted one DUI and two felony drug arrests. Officers also issued 73 speeding tickets and two child passenger safety infractions. Police also stopped 23 uninsured motorists and nine drivers with suspended/revoked licenses.

Statewide, law enforcement officers wrote 2,321 seatbelt violations and 1,448 GT-I9300 cell phone/texting tickets during the patrols. Last year, during this same time period, officers on the extra patrols statewide issued 3,171 seatbelt violations and 1,059 cell phone violations.Do you often find yourself out and about without a charger and your cell phone dies? A local company has a solution.

They're called Upstate Charge and they are now installing charging stations at bars and restaurants around town. News10NBC spoke to the founders of this company about the new idea.Lucky's Bar in Chili is the first place you can go to find a cell phone charging station. The process is simple. Just $3 will give you 15 minutes of charging and anywhere from 10-percent to 30-percent added to your battery life. Also, multiple GT-I9300 phones can be charged at once.df2gdWD43

News10NBC asked the co-founder of Upstate Charge how he and his business partner came up with this idea. He says they saw how many people used their phones and how few options there are for charging them outside your home or car.“You're in meetings. At dinner you're having drinks or you name it, you can't do it. So we were like, we need to come up with something that lets people keep in their normal routine while charging their phones and not worrying about them dying,” said Justin Basch, co-founder of Upstate Charge.

Another question News10NBC asked was how do you keep these GT-I9500 phone from being stolen while they are charging.Right now you have to stand nearby to keep an eye on it. But next month they plan on releasing a version of the station where you would charge your phone in a little locked locker.

Tablets: Delivering solutions to business needs-PriceAngels

More and more companies prefer newest tablets in delivering solutions to their business needs, according to Oliver Ebel, vice president and general manager of Lenovo Middle East & Africa. He says there's a host of solutions that businesses can rely on to empower their mobile work force, ranging from laptops to Ultrabooks and tablets. "All of these are viable options, but is there a preference that organizations have when it comes to cost, form and function? The introduction of a new form of tablet that functions like a laptop and is lighter than an Ultrabook could be the answer," Ebel says.

In an article entitled "A business case for tablets: delivering solutions to business needs," Ebel says that a recent survey of 448 businesses by Model Metrics found that 22 percent of companies have begun formal deployment of tablets."Seventy-eight percent more are also planning to do so this year. Seventy-two percent claimed to already have tablets in use, just not formally integrated," he adds.

The survey also noted that of the existing tablet deployments, most "lack any ports or inputs useful to a business user and require expensive accessories to perform basic computer tasks like transferring files from a thumb drive. Accessory external keyboards, a necessity for any serious user, also add to the cost, as do protective cases."df2gdWD43

He also says that with the launch of Microsoft's Windows 8, the tablet landscape has completely changed. "Boasting native touch screen capabilities and the ability to run on both laptops and tablets, Windows 8 provides corporations with much needed solution to their deployment needs," he says.He says that the new OS fits easily into a company's MDM setup, allowing deployment of updates and software using their existing platform.

Ebel adds that one of the tablets designed around Windows 8 is the Lenovo ThinkPad Tablet 2.Built from the ground up in collaboration with both Microsoft and Intel, the Lenovo ThinkPad Tablet 2 redefines the way tablets are used for business in a mobile environment, providing always on connectivity for the mobile workforce and integrating easily in existing Windows IT environment for easier deployment.

Extremely lightweight and able to run a full day on a single charge, the latest android tablet runs new visually rich and touch-optimized Windows & Store apps, plus familiar multifunction Windows desktop applications, allowing users to adapt quickly and more easily to a new platform.

"The ThinkPad Tablet 2 also offers USB and HDMI, as well as Wi-Fi and 3G connectivity. The addition of Near Field Communication (NFC) capabilities makes the Think Pad Tablet 2 a secure solution for mobile data transfer and content sharing. More so, once docked to the ThinkPad Tablet 2 Bluetooth keyboard, the tablet turns into a fully-fledged laptop for word processing and content creation, meaning higher productivity and ease of use," Ebel adds.

Avoid Using Cell Phones While Walking In Public

Despite the recent drop in the number of injured pedestrians, total injuries related to walking while using a GT-I9300 cell phone have more than doubled over the past decade.Jack Nasar, co-author of the study and professor of city and regional planning at The Ohio State University, said that if this trend continues he wouldn't be surprised if the number of pedestrian deaths related to cell phone use doubles again by 2015.

He added that "the role of cell phones in distracted driving injuries and deaths gets a lot of attention and rightly so, but we need to also consider the danger cell phone use poses to pedestrians."According to the results of the study people between the ages of 16 to 25 were at the most risk of being injured because of cell phone use.

The researchers analyzed injury reports of more than 100 hospitals collected by the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System - a database maintained by the U.S. Consumer Products Safety Commission (CPSC). From 2004 to 2010 the investigators identified the number of pedestrian injuries which were associated with cell phone use.

The researchers came across several cases of accidents while people were walking and talking on their mobile phones. One case involved a teenage boy walking straight off a bridge into a ditch while talking on a cell phone, and another man was hit by car while walking across the road and chatting on his phone.

In 2004, around 559 pedestrians were admitted to hospital following an injury related to cell phone use, the following year there were only 256 cases. However, the number of pedestrians treated in emergency rooms while using their cell phone has risen every year since 2005.The authors say that the number of cell phone-related injuries could actually be a lot higher.fdd2SDDxd1

They believe that a better way of calculating the real extent of pedestrian injuries related to cell phone use could come from comparing distracted walking to distracted driving - which has been studied very well. A study published in the American Journal of Public Health revealed that texting and cell phone use have led to a significant rise in fatalities due to distracted driving, rising from 4,572 fatalities in 2005 to 5,870 in 2008.

Another study, which appeared in the journal Applied Cognitive Psychology showed that people have greater difficultly maintaining a fixed speed, or keeping their car safe in a single lane when using their cell phone. The researchers compared CPSC estimates for injuries among drivers who were distracted by GT-I9500 cell phones with more accurate data gathered from emergency rooms.

The analysis revealed that the number of actual crash-related injuries in emergency rooms related to cell phone use is grossly underestimated by the CPSC. In fact, Nasar said that the real number of injuries is more than 1,300 times higher than what the CPSC estimated.

The Good And Bad Of Tablets At Work

Stacked started in Torrance, Calif., in 2011 with the idea of serving highly personalized pizzas and burgers by letting people tap their complex orders into an iPad. The iPad offered a bit of novelty, too. But the newest tablets has delivered unexpected benefits, says Stacked co-CEO Paul Motenko: Orders get to customers about five minutes faster than they did without iPads, and 86% of guests say the iPad enhanced their experience.

We're still learning a lot about tablets -- what benefits they bring to business, where they don't work and what their limitations are. While iPads led the way, Android- and Windows-based devices are finding homes, sometimes creating new use cases.fdd2SDDxd1

Tablets, in short, are getting to work, and often doing much grittier tasks than taking pizza orders. The Drug Enforcement Agency, for example, is testing Dell Latitude tablets for its agents to use on stakeouts, and it could eventually distribute 6,000 of the devices to its employees, says Mark Shafernich, the agency's CTO. "We want [our agents] on the street, making cases," says Shafernich. Instead, DEA agents spend about one week out of every month filling out paperwork in the office.

"We've got 25% downtime, where they're not surveilling bad guys," he says. But with the Latitude tablets, "guys can type at 3 in the morning, while watching a dark apartment waiting for someone to come out." The tablets should also let the DEA reduce the number of desktop computers it maintains. The Latitude tabs -- less expensive and more mobile than laptops and equipped with a vivid screen that's ideal for scrutinizing intelligence photos -- represent a "game-changing" consolidation of technology, Shafernich says.

General Electric is looking to tablets to improve its factory operations and provide a new revenue source. Randy Rausch, general manager of GE Energy Storage, has been using iPads for the past year to help workers make better decisions on the factory floor. "If something is going wrong, we want to know as soon as we can, so we're invested in getting people information at their fingertips," Rausch says. Whereas supervisors used to sit in control rooms watching monitoring equipment, they can now use a tablet to carry that information wherever they want.

Monitoring, however, is only the first and simplest stage of tablet use, says Mark Bernardo, who heads development of automation software for GE Intelligent Platforms, the software unit that built its corporate sibling's iPad-based factory system. The second stage will be automatically delivering the right information to the right person.

"No monitoring -- they'll just be notified if there's something they need to pay attention to," says Bernardo, who adds that the ability to "take the control room wherever I am" translates to a productivity boost because it facilitates faster decision-making, cutting down back-and-forth between workers on the floor and those in the control room if a piece of machinery breaks down, for example. Tablets also let managers spend more time on the floor and gain greater visibility into daily operations.

GE is finding new benefits now that it has iPads in employees' hands. Maintenance workers are using the latest android tablet cameras to consult with one another about repairs, and field workers can use the devices' photo and geolocation tools to document their work.

Spate of cell phone thefts hits Oak Park

Six people were robbed of their GT-I9300 cell phones or had them snatched from their hands between June 7 and June 11.Police made arrests in two of the incidents, and are investigating to see if a gang of teenaged street thieves are responsible for other incidents.

An Oak Park man was walking on the 800 block of Erie Street at 8:35 p.m. June 6 when he was confronted by four juveniles. One of them demanded his wallet and then punched him in the face. The other three juveniles also began punching the man, who dropped his iPhone. The thieves fled, running northbound, and the GT-I9500 cell phone was recovered several blocks away. The victim was taken to Rush Oak Park Hospital, where he was treated and released for a bloody nose and a head bump.

In another incident, a 15-year old Oak Park boy was walking on the 300 block of North East Avenue at 9:05 p.m. June 7 when a man tapped him on the shoulder from behind and asked to use his cell phone. When the boy said no, the man punched him on the side of the head, knocking him down, and continued to punch him. The thief then reached behind his back and said “I have a gun. Give me your phone.” He then took an iPhone, valued at $600, and ran off.

Another theft occurred just a few blocks away at about the same time. In that incident, an Oak Park man riding his bike on the 700 block of North Fair Oaks Avenue at 9:07 p.m. June 7, was surrounded by five males, one of whom displayed a black handgun and pressed it against the cyclist’s side. He then reached into the cyclist’s pocket and stole his cell phone. After ordering the cyclist to get off his bike and run north on Fair Oaks, the gang fled.

In another incident, at 9:25 p.m. June 11, a 14-year old Chicago boy grabbed another CTA Green Line rider by the arm and attempted to steal his I5 MTK6577 cell phone. However, the victim and his friend, both 18-year old Saudi nationals here as exchange students, were able to hold the thief until police arrived. The boy was processed and turned over to a guardian. There were two other incidents classified as “theft from person,” where no force or threat of force was used in the crime.

At 1:55 p.m. on June 9, a 44-year-old man sitting on a bench in Taylor Park, in the 900 block or North Ridgeland Avenue, had his cell phone snatched from his hand. The other incident occurred at 7:40 p.m. on June 10 in the 6000 block of West North Avenue. In that case, four Chicago boys, ages 12 to 14, were arrested and charged with theft from person after they grabbed a cell phone from a nine-year-old girl’s hand and ran off with it.

Anyone who has ever had a cell phone stolen knows how frustrating it can be to get the phone back, or get the phone shut off. Now, federal lawmakers want to make that process easier. Senator Charles Schumer said that if someone reports that their smart phone has been stolen, the phone company should render the device useless from that point forward and kill any service to it for good. The theft of cell phones is the fastest growing robbery crime. Verizon and T-Mobile said they have stolen phone databases that make it impossible for devices reported as stolen to be reactivated on their networks.

However, it is possible that those phones will be reactivated on another network. Apple provides some assistance in locating stolen devices with built-in tracking technology but there can be a delay, and certain security features might not work once the cheap cell phone cases is disconnected from the internet. So Senator Schumer, along with Attorneys General in several states, said they want a kill switch. "Within a couple of months, word would spread within the criminal community and people wouldn't steal cell phones anymore.

Right now it's very easy to just go over there and sell the cell phone in the hot market and then the phone provider changes the number if you want. If you made those phones dead, the minute they were stolen and reported in--cell phones would not be stolen in a matter of months," said Senator Schumer. Lawmakers are asking cell phone companies to consider this - if it isn't done, Schumer said he will draft legislation to address the issue.

Microsoft Surface Pro combines tablet, computer

For the past several months I’ve been trying out Microsoft’s Surface Pro, a newest tablets and computer in one that runs a new version of the Windows operating system, plus all Windows applications. The product has met with some controversy, partly a result of being such a radical departure from a standard Windows computer. To some, it’s trying to be both a tablet and computer, without excelling at either. To others, it’s a tablet that’s too heavy because it’s encumbered with the hardware needed to make it also work as a computer.

So I decided to take the time to use it as it was meant to be, a single device, and to determine whether it would be a good replacement for carrying both a notebook and tablet.

The Pro, along with the lookalike Surface RT (a lower-cost tablet), is the first computing hardware developed by Microsoft (excluding the Xbox game machine). It’s a beautifully designed solid slab with angled edges and is built of what Microsoft refers to as vapor-magnesium, a richly finished black metal, with a beautiful latest android tablet touch screen. It’s much more handsome than most other computing products.

The Pro is best used with one of its optional keyboards, which also works as a protective cover. It has a display that responds to two kinds of touch: finger and pen. The aspect ratio is more elongated when compared to a conventional tablet, making it good for computing, but less so for using it as a tablet to read books in the portrait mode.

Microsoft has taken a different direction from Apple, which has professed that a tablet and computer need to be two different devices. Microsoft’s approach is much more difficult and risky to accomplish because not only does it put constraints on the hardware (weight for example), but it Q88 Tablet also means developing an operating system that works in both environments.

In addition, Microsoft wants to use the same OS on conventional Windows computers, adding further restraints. As a result, the product will take time to evolve to meet the needs of all of its users, and it may fail to satisfy everyone, at the start.

But after carrying it with me for a few months, I like the product a lot, and find that I am able to do most of my work on it, using it as both a tablet and computer. It’s lighter and more compact than my 13-inch MacBook Air, and nearly as compact and tolerably heavier than an iPad.

The immediate advantages are carrying a single compact device, never needing to worry about whether my tablets for sale and PC are in sync or where the files are, nor needing to carry multiple power adapters and keeping two devices charged. One unexpected benefit has been that the TSA thinks it is a tablet, and I’ve never been asked to remove it from my bag at security checkpoints.

Email ftsales to buy additional rights. At $129, the 7 inch tablet PC’s price tag is nearly cheap enough to have come from one of China’s many no-name electronics brands.

But the 7-inch device is instead one of the newest products from Asus, a Taiwanese brand better known for its relatively pricey notebooks and hybrid notebook-tablets.As PC sales fall, computer makers are hunting for growth by launching a slew of small, cheap tablets, similar to Apple’s popular iPad mini.

Analysts say the decision to target the mass market with increasingly cheap tablets risks endangering already slender profit margins – but PC makers may not have much choice.“Even though it’s not a very profitable business to go into, they have to be there in order to stay relevant,” says Pin Chen Tang, an analyst with Canalys. “It’s kind of like, ‘If I don’t do it, the other vendors will do it, and I will lose my brand.’

Brands including Asus, Acer, Hewlett-Packard and Lenovo have all in recent weeks announced or brought to market Android 10 inch tablets priced under $200, including Asus’ $129 MeMO Pad HD and HP’s Slate 7, priced at $170.High quality global journalism requires investment. Asus wants to put a tablet “in the hands of every consumer”, says Jeff Yang, the company’s marketing chief, who declined to comment on the tablet’s margin. “We would like to transform their expectations about value.”Acer says it expects its focus on lower-end, ”value” tablets will help it more than triple its tablet sales from the 1.8m it sold last year.Cheaper small tablets are “the new battlefield for major PC [brands],” says Alberto Moel, an analyst with Bernstein, the brokerage.

The new launches come as PC brands are increasingly trying to experiment with new types of devices as they try to offset declining core PC businesses. As well as pushing more aggressively into 8 inch tablet – a business led by Apple, Samsung and Amazon’s Kindle – PC brands are testing consumers’ interest in convertible devices that flip between being a notebook and a tablet.

The move towards smaller, cheaper tablets means average selling prices have fallen 12 per cent to $461 since the beginning of last year, according to Canalys’ estimates. The trend resembles that in smartphones in recent years. Chinese whitebox brands, powered by cheap chips made by Taiwan’s MediaTek, have driven down the cost of high-powered smartphones to around $100.

That commoditisation, which happened in emerging markets faster than many expected, means brands such as Motorola have struggled against competition from newcomers.MediaTek is also in part behind the move into low-cost tablets, although its chips are also used in more than just whitebox brands. For example, Asus’ MeMO device includes a powerful quad-core chip that MediaTek launched last month, while new small tablets from Acer and Lenovo also use MediaTek chips.

The chip designer, based in Taiwan, in April upgraded its forecast of sales of chips for tablets for sale from 5m-10m to up to 15m this year. But analysts say the new tablets are unlikely to help the tablet brands as much as they are boosting MediaTek.Kevin Chang at Citi estimates Asus’ Memo could generate an operating margin of 1-2 per cent if volumes are high – far below the company’s 5.3 per cent operating margin last quarter.

“Android tablets are too unprofitable,” Mr Chang wrote in a note following this month’s Computex trade show in Taipei. He also raised concerns that “the sharp price decline and specification improvement of tablets” could come at the expense of PC companies’ higher margin notebook business.

Apple looking at bigger iPhone screens, multiple colors: sources

Apple Inc is exploring launching cheap iphone 4 cases with bigger screens, as well as cheaper models in a range of colors, over the next year, said four people with knowledge of the matter, as it takes a cue from rival Samsung Electronics. The moves, which are still under discussion, underscore how the California-based firm that once ruled the smartphone market is increasingly under threat from its aggressive South Korean competitor. Samsung has overtaken Apple in market share through the popularity of its bigger-screen Galaxy "phablets" and by flooding the market with a range of products at different prices.

Apple is looking at introducing at least two bigger iPhones next year - one with a 4.7-inch screen and one with a 5.7-inch screen - said the sources, including those in the supply chain in Asia. They said suppliers have been approached with plans for the larger screens, but noted it is still unclear whether Apple will actually launch its flagship product in the larger sizes.

cheap iphone 4s cases possible shift to offer what is often referred to as "phablets" - chunkier smartphones not quite big enough to qualify as tablets - comes as the long-time consumer and investor darling faces pressure to deliver more than one new handset model a year. Critics say its pace of innovation has slowed since the death of legendary co-founder Steve Jobs.

The iPhone 5 launched last September was the first to veer away from the Apple phone's 3.5-inch screen, which Jobs famously deemed "the perfect size for consumers" and had been used in every iPhone since the iconic device was unveiled in 2007.dfdf1323D

The current iPhone 5 has one of the smaller screens among the best-selling smartphones in the mobile market, where consumers spend more time browsing the web and streaming content. Samsung's Galaxy S4 and Galaxy Note 2 have 5-inch and 5.5-inch screens, respectively.

For this year, Apple is expected to launch two new models, widely referred to as the iPhone 5S, with new fingerprint technology, and a cheaper version in plastic casing, supply chain sources have said. Apple plans to dress up the cheaper phone in a range of 5-6 colors to differentiate it from the more expensive model that has traditionally come only in black and white.

The U.S. firm has discussed a price of $99 for the cheaper phone, the timing of which could slip to next year, one of the people said. It's not yet clear what the final price would be.apple accessories - whose revenue growth has decelerated from the heady days of 2010 when it introduced the iPad and when the iPhone was the world's top selling smartphone - has sought ways to re-energize its flagship line.

Analysts say the company needs a cheaper gadget to push on in growth markets in China and India, and to counter Samsung's edge in having phones priced up and down the spectrum. China, the world's biggest smartphone market, is set to grow 48 percent this year, outpacing the global increase of 31 percent, according to industry forecasts. While Apple only offers a single phone model across all markets, it has successfully marketed the iPod music player and its iPad in different sizes and at varying prices. Asked at last month's AllThingsD industry conference why Apple hasn't launched different sized best iphone 4s accessories, CEO Tim Cook said: "We haven't so far. That doesn't shut off the future."

He explained that the range of iPods serve different audiences and needs. "On the phone, that's the question. Are we now at a point to serve enough people that we need to do that?"Cook noted a larger screen comes with trade-offs on features such as battery life, resolution and brightness.

Test production for both the standard and cheaper iPhone models aims to start next month, with mass production ramping up in August to meet a September launch target, two people said."Trial production was originally planned to start in June, but the mixing of colors is taking longer than expected as Apple has very high and idealistic standards," said one source in Asia, adding 20 million plastic iPhones are expected to ship in the October-December quarter.

Japan's Sharp Corp and Japan Display and South Korea's LG Display will supply the panels for the aluminum iPhone 5S and the plastic iPhone, while Hon Hai Precision Industry will assemble the higher-end phone and Pegatron will put together the cheaper model.

Cell phone use exploding

Drivers get ticketed for using their cell phones during Target Zero program

For four hours on May 30, five Redmond Police Department (RPD) traffic officers were on the lookout for drivers using their GT-I9300 cell phones and not buckling their seat belts. As part of the King County Target Zero Task Force’s Click It or Ticket enforcement, they issued 48 citations — 46 for cell phone/texting violations and two for seat belts — from 4:30-8:30 p.m., according to Jim Bove, RPD’s community outreach facilitator.

“The cell phone issue continues to be a huge problem. We recommend people just putting their phone in the trunk. That way drivers aren’t even tempted to talk on the phone or text,” Bove said.County wide between May 20 and June 2, officers issued 387 seat belt infractions and 322 tickets for cell phone usage/texting or usage of other electronic devices. Last year in King County during this same time period, officers on extra patrols wrote 296 seat belt infractions and 197 GT-I9500 cell phone violations.

Statewide during the patrols, officers from more than 130 police and sheriff agencies wrote 2,321 seat belt violations and 1,448 cell phone/texting tickets. Last year, during this same time period, officers on the extra patrols statewide issued 3,171 seat belt violations and 1,059 cell phone violations. The program is funded by a Washington Traffic Safety Commission grant.desSDds34

“This is a really important issue, not just with our police departments but with the community. They want people to be held accountable for behind-the-wheel cell phone use,” said Annie Kirk, King County Target Zero manager.“People don’t always make the best decisions, so officers give them a reminder why that’s important,” Kirk added. “We did have a large number of citations, but officers also saw a lot of people who were being safe in their cars.”

Kirk noted that officers see a lot of cell phone use in Redmond, and the city will be participating in another King County campaign focusing on I5 MTK6577 cell phone-distraction enforcement in late June and in August.Quick - put your cell phone up to your ear. Which side is it on? Researchers say that simple move can tell them a lot about how your brain works.

When it comes to how you hold your phone, turns out it's your brain that makes the call.A team at Henry Ford Hospitals found that more than 70% of people held their phone to the ear on the same side as their dominant hand. That tended to be the case even when it made it more difficult to hold the phone and take notes.

Researchers think the preference is determined by the location of the speech and language centers in your brain. Left-brain thinkers who tend to be more logical and analytical are more likely to hold the cheap cell phone cases to their right ear, while right-brain thinkers who are often more intuitive and creative tend to hold the phone to their left ear.

When I say “next-TV,” I mean TV as a boob tube, not a “second-screen device.” Gartner, Inc., for example, predicts that the tablet will become “the principal force behind social TV experiences.”

You can certainly while away the hours doing all sorts of social stuff on your 8 inch tablet, just as you watch a big-screen TV in the living room. No question. I do that, too. But I do suspect many of us also cuddle up with our tablet in a sofa or in a bed, simply to watch a movie or a TV show in selfish solitude — probably more often than we’d care to admit. That idea of “the media tablet as your next TV” is the premise on which a number of companies — software and hardware developers included — are depending to capitalize their business in 2013 and beyond.

As discussed in a previous article entitled “Retina Display badly needs video processing,” the quality of mobile displays today is by far outpacing the quality of content streamed to mobile screens. Even though we should be enjoying on our tablets for sale far better video, the reality is that we are watching is pretty crappy. Resolution limitations and flaws in video only get magnified in the newfangled high-resolution mobile displays.

Inventec to counter shrinking notebook shipments with new tablet shipments

Contract PC maker Inventec Corp yesterday said it plans to start shipping newest tablets of between 7 inches and 8 inches from the fourth quarter of the year to increase sales drivers in response to shrinking notebook shipments.“Inventec is definitely going to hold a share in the tablet market and has targeted smaller-sized tablets as the company’s priority,” the Central News Agency quoted Inventec chairman Richard Lee as saying in a report.Lee said Inventec planned to deliver small shipments of tablets from the fourth quarter of this year, adding that the company expects to see significant growth in tablet shipments if robust demand for the product is sustainable.

This year, Inventec’s total notebook, all-in-one desktop and latest android tablet shipments are expected to reach 20 million units, and grow 50 percent to 30 million units next year, Lee said at a shareholders meeting yesterday.Tablet products are forecast to become Inventec’s new sales driver this year, while shipments of other products such as servers and business laptops are expected to continue growing steadily, Lee added.

Lee said the Ultrabook and Windows 8 operating system failed to effectively boost market demand for PC products, adding that enterprises and consumers did not have a strong replacement demand for PCs because of cost concerns, and because of the rise of tablets and smartphones. To cope with challenges ahead, Inventec will continue to manufacture touch-enabled PC products such as tablets and all-in-one desktops, which have seen a stronger demand, Lee said.desSDds34

Currently, sales of consumer and business laptops account for less than 55 percent of Inventec’s total sales, while those of servers account for between 20 percent and 25 percent and those of smartphones, Q88 Tablet and all-in-one desktops account for the remaining 20 percent.

The US Patent & Trademark Office published a patent application from Apple that reveals an all-new kind of tablet cover. The patent filing is deadly focused on the make-up and process in creating the cover using various materials with non-radio portions so as not to interfere with the tablet's various radios. Considering that Apple's original Smart Cover was introduced in early 2011 and that this new filing was only filed in December 2012, it's pretty clear that Ive's Industrial Design Team have something completely new in mind. Could it be a new iBooks centric design? Only time will tell.

While Apple's patent filing doesn't veer from the narrow focus of the construction of the cover, one has to consider the gigantic hint that Apple's design team have left us with. Apple has designed an all-new tablets for sale cover that bears no resemblance whatsoever to their current Smart Cover design. Considering that Apple is contemplating the use of leather and/or an exotic mix of materials for this new tablet case, one has to wonder if Apple's design team isn't attempting to appeal to the very distinguished iBook reader.

Today, the market for mini tablets is getting quite crowed with every major OEM designing cheap tablets that all look alike. Creating a "different" kind of integrated tablet cover could differentiate an iPad mini with a rich leather-bound appearance.

Big Tobacco To Join E-Cigarette Revolution

If the giants of a particular industry adopts a new and up-and-coming item, does that bring legitimacy to the product? In the case of EGO CE4, we’re about to find out. According to reports, companies that are immediately associated with Big Tobacco–Philip Morris USA (Marlboro) and Reynolds American (Camels)–are throwing their collective hat into the growing industry of electronic cigarettes, a move that is surprising simply because of how long it took these companies to offer these vapor-driven replacements for standard tobacco cigarettes.

When you consider the fact that e-cigarettes have officially crossed over to the mainstream, thanks in large part to the commercials created by Blu, one of the leading e-cigarette companies on the market. The one featuring actor Stephen Dorff is currently in rotation, depending on what channels you watch.

As these devices gain in popularity–look, even NBA players use them–it stands to reason the companies that profit the most from traditional cigarettes would enjoy a different, perhaps less controversial revenue stream. As indicated, the two giants of the tobacco industry are preparing to launch their own version of electronic cigarettes; the “MarkTen” for the makers of Marlboro and the “VUSE” from the makers of Camel. The VUSE ego t electronic cigarette will be introduced in Colorado on July, 2013, and the MarkTen will be introduced in the state of Indiana in August. If these limited introductions succeed, expect them to be released on a national, and perhaps international scale shortly thereafter.

The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) said on Wednesday that existing e-cigarettes on the market were not good enough. However, manufacturers have time to raise their game and apply for a license, allowing them to sell regulated devices as over-the-counter products from 2016.

A growing number of established tobacco companies are investing in the ego-t battery market worldwide, including Lorillard, British American Tobacco, Imperial Tobacco, Reynolds American and Altria.

The primary components of electronic cigarette cartridges and vapor are propylene glycol, glycerine and nicotine. Smokers are harmed by the deadly tar and toxins in tobacco smoke, not the nicotine, said MHRA Chief Medical Officer Sally Davies in today’s statement.

Still, there has been little research into how safe electronic cigarette battery are, according to Cancer Research UK. Anecdotally, aspiration pneumonia and second-degree burns from a cigarette exploding in a consumer’s mouth have been reported, MHRA said.Researchers at the University of Athens said electronic cigarettes cause damage to the lungs, as shown in a study they presented in September at the European Respiratory Society annual meeting in Vienna.
